What Is A ‘Plate Workout’?

Simply put, a ‘plate workout’ is a strength workout performed with a weight plate -- just like the kind you normally place on a barbell to do squats, bench, cleans, etc. Basically any exercise you can do with a barbell or dumbbell can be performed using a single weight plate. The difficulty and resistance depends upon the size plate you wish to use; most weight rooms, gyms and clubs have plates ranging in weight from 2.5 lbs to 45 lbs.

This is a fantastic workout to use often or sporadically -- and is great for preseason, inseason, postseason training and everything else!!

 

Why A ‘Plate Workout’?

Plate workouts can be a valuable addition to any overall strength program. I personally incorporate plate workouts from time to time with athletes utilizing my program, ‘The Complete Basketball Strength & Speed Program’. Plate workouts are a great change-up from the normal, everyday workouts and they can easily incorporate large numbers of athletes at once. Here are just a few of the wonderful ways in which plate workouts can be very effective:

  1. A nice change-of-pace from your normal 'routine'.
  2. A quality workout that can be performed in a short amount of time. This
    workout takes anywhere from 10-30 minutes, depending on number sets and
    reps you choose to follow.
  3. A great cardiovascular workout. More than just a strength workout, you will
    enhance and develop the cardiovascular system.
  4. Easily incorporates large groups, teams, and class sizes.
  5. Can easily be utilized by no matter what kind of facility you have access to.
  6. It is a phenomenal in-season workout. Besides being able to be performed in a
    short amount of time, you get a great workout without being too difficult and
    strenuous during the long season.
  7. Develops mental toughness. The nature of the workout design and proper
    performance of it make it difficult and tiring. Toughness is developed by not
    quitting when it seems the easy thing to do.
  8. FUN!! Yes, it can be difficult and taxing but it is fun! You will know you have
    worked hard and you will feel better about yourself for completing it … that’s
    fun, isn’t it?!?

I am sure after performing a few workouts, you will find even more benefits and
positive aspects to these plate workouts.
