UCLA Series

Purpose: To teach and improve footwork needed in offensive and defensive skills; to improve the athlete's ability to execute the basic types of dribbles.

Drill: This drill is performed the length of the court. Set up four lines per court along one of the baselines, as shown in the diagram. The UCLA Series consists of the ten maneuvers described below:

Change of Direction Cut.
All players begin by taking three steps to the right.  They plant the foot in the direction they are moving (in this case the right foot).  They now must make a solid V-cut by picking up the other foot (in this case the left foot and sending it in the opposite direction.  They continue left and repeat the process (plant left foot and send right one in opposite direction).  Players should continue up and back down the court. (Do not use a ball.)

Stop-Starts.
Players start running at full speed.  When they reach the foul line they slow almost to a complete stop.  They then accelerate back to full speed and repeat the process when they reach the half-court line, going the full length of the court and back, slowing at each foul line and the half-court line. (Do not use a ball.)

Stutter-Step.
Players will do the same process as in #2 but this time when slowing down they bang their feet as quickly as possible. (Do not use a ball.)

Defensive Change of Direction.
Players assume a defensive stance on a baseline facing out of bounds.  All players begin by going to the right.  They shuffle to the right for three steps.  They then plant the foot in the direction they are going (in this case the right foot) and use it as a pivot foot.  They then swing the left leg and foot to open up.  Now players shuffle to the left and repeat the process (plant left foot, use it as a pivot foot, and open up the right leg and foot).  Continue process up and back down the length of the court. (Do not use a ball.)

Offensive and Defensive Change of Direction
Coach puts two players together as partners, one on offense and the other on defense. They do drills (1) and (4).  When they go the length of the court, they switch assignments and come back down the court. (Do not use a ball.)

Offensive Change of Direction.
This time players use a basketball, working on the crossover dribble.  The footwork is the same as in (1).  In dribbling, players use the right hand when moving to the right and the left hand when going left.  They make the crossover dribble when they make their V-cut. They should make sure to keep the ball low when changing hands.

Stutter-Step Dribble.
This is the same drill as in (3) except that players use a ball for dribbling practice. They make sure to keep control of the ball while doing the stutter step, dribbling with the right hand going up the court and with the left hand coming back down.

Stop-and-Go Dribble.
Same drill as in (2) except that, again, players use a ball for dribbling practice. Make sure the players push the ball out in front of them when they move at full speed and keep the ball under control when slowing down.  Players use only right hand going up the court and only the left hand coming back.

Spin Dribble.
Players dribble with the right hand, moving straight toward other baseline.  After approximately three steps, the players will plant opposite foot (left foot) and swing the other foot behind the planted foot (in this case they swing the right foot behind the left).  Players pull basketball around in one dribble with the same hand (in this case the right hand) a complete 180 degrees. Once the ball has gone the 180 degrees, then players dribble with the left hand.  Now, they dribble with the left hand, plant the right foot, swing the left behind, etc.  This maneuver should be repeated all the way up and back down the court.

Speed Dribble.
Players try to dribble as quickly as possible, pushing the ball out in front of them. They should go up the court with the right hand and come back using only the left hand.
