The idea behind this zone press offense is to keep the lanes filled but to also keep three players in a 'triangle' situation. With the lanes filled and a player down near the basket, the defense will have to make a decision as to who to trap and when. The triangle formation will always ensure that someone should be open if they do attempt a trap.
#4 takes the ball out of bounds and passes to #1. #3 cuts hard to the middle looking for a pass from #1. If #1 passes to #3, #3 dribbles to the basket with #2 and #5 filling the lanes. (NOTE: #5 should always go opposite of the ball) If #3 is not open, #1 looks to pass to #2. If #2 receives the pass, #3 breaks to the basket looking for the pass from #2. If #3 is defended, #1 cuts in behind and receives the pass from #2. #1 will dribble to the hoop upon receiving the pass with #2 and #5 filling the lane. #4 trails behind the play as the safety valve. |

If in the previous sequence, #3 or #2 are not able to receive the pass from #1, #1 will reverse the ball back to #4. #4 will dribble toward the side while #2 cuts hard to the middle. #4 looks to pass to #2 if open. If #2 receives the pass, he will advance the ball toward the basket while #3 and #5 fill the lanes. (#5 still moves opposite of the ball, as shown)
If #2 is not open, #4 will pass to #3. #3 looks to pass to #2 breaking to the basket. If #2 is not open, #3 looks to pass to #1 cutting in behind #2. #1 then advances the ball toward the basket while #3 and #5 fill the lanes. Note: The only thing to worry about here is the 10-second violation, but there is no need to hurry in this press attack if something is not available. The ball can continuously be reversed back and forth as needed until an opening to attack presents itself. |
