Passing Drill

Three in the Circle Drill

Purpose: For offensive players to work on passing under double-team pressure.  This drill can also be useful for defensive players to learn double-teaming techniques and off-ball anticipation.

Drill: The drill begins with the coach passing a ball to one of the offensive players around the circle.  The two players in the middle that are closest to the ball go to double team the ball.  Player 1 attempts to pass to anyone on the circle except for the two players on either side (2 and 9 in this diagram).  The third defensive player tries to intercept the pass.  If the third defender intercepts the pass or gets a deflection, he or she replaces player 1 on the circle, and player 1 goes into the middle.

Coaching Points: Make sure that no lob passes are thrown.  The player being double teamed should try to keep the ball down in order to lower the defenders' hands, try to step through the pressure, and stay active with the ball so as to prevent being tied up into a held ball situation.  The defender not involved in a double team must learn to read the player with the ball and anticipate where the pass may be thrown.
