Simple Techniques for Getting Open Shots

Technique 1 - Wing Screen for Point Guard

The guards on the wing, #2 and #3, each set a screen on the defensive guards. #1 dribbles off either screen for a shot.

If the defense is in an odd front zone, such as the 1-3-1, the wing guards can set a screen on the top guard of the zone.

Technique 2 - Dribble Off Baseline

#2 has the ball on the baseline and is guarded by 'X'. #2 dribbles up and away from the baseline slowly, pulling 'X' with him. #4 pops out to the vacated spot looking for a pass from #2 and then hits the open shot.

Technique 3 - Drive Inside Shoulder, Pass Behind

The point guard, #1, drives to the inside shoulder of defender 'X'. If #1 is stopped by 'X', #2 looks to replace #1 at the top. #1 passes behind to #2 for the shot.

Technique 4 - Pull Zone with Dribble

The point guard, #1, dribbles to the right, pulling ^1. #2 pops out to the top of the key and receives the pass from #1. #2 drives at ^2 and then passes to #3 on the wing for the shot.

Technique 5 - Post Screen for Wing

#2 passes the ball to #1. #1 penetrates into the middle while #5 sets a screen on 'X'. #2 fades to the corner looking for a pass from #1 for the shot.

Technique 6 - Flare Screen

#1 dribbles to the left, pulling the defense with him. #5 sets a screen in on the defensive forward. #2 flares to the corner for an open shot.

Technique 7 - Point Screen

#1 passes to the wing to #3. #3 pulls the defense down with a dribble. #1 screens in on the defensive guard. The weak side wing, #2, cuts off the screen for a shot.

Technique 8 - Baseline Screen

#1 dribbles toward the wing. #5 sets a baseline screen for #2 and then opens up to the ball. #2 comes off the screen for a shot on the baseline. #1 may pass fake to #2 and look for the pass to #5. The key point here is #5 opening up to the ball after setting the baseline screen.

Technique 9 - Drag, Pull, and Pop

#1 drags the defense over to the right with the dribble. #2 pulls over to the top of the key. After receiving the pass from #1, #2 penetrates into the zone and pops the pass to #3 on the wing for a shot.

Technique 10 - Dribble Out

#4 has the ball on the baseline and dribbles out toward the wing. #2 slides over to the top. As 'X' goes with #4, #5 slides down to the short corner, replacing #4's vacated spot. #4 looks to pass back to #5 for the shot.

#2 passes to #1 while #4 slides across the lane and #5 sets a screen on 'X'. #2 slides down behind the zone. #1 fakes a pass opposite and passes back to #2 for the shot.

Technique 12 - Skip and Screen

#1 makes a skip pass to #2 and slides down.
#5 sets a screen on 'X'. #2 penetrates middle and passes to #1 for the shot.

Technique 13 - Elbow Screen

#1 has the ball near the elbow. #4 sets an upscreen on 'X' as #2 slides down to the corner. #1 drives off #4's screen and passes to #2 for the shot.

Technique 14 - Inside Screen

#1 has the ball on the wing. #5 sets a baseline screen for #4. #4 screens into the lane on 'X'. #5 steps back to the ball. #1 lobs the ball to #5 for the shot.

Technique 14 - Drag and Drive

#1 drag dribbles to the left and pulls 'X' over. #3 pops out to the top and receives a pass from #1. #3 drives hard at the opposite 'X' while #2 slides down the wing. #3 passes to #2 for the shot.

Technique 16 - Double Screen

#2 passes to #1 at the top. #1 dribbles opposite. #2 screens in on the defensive guard and #4 screens in on the defensive forward. #3 pops out to the wing. #1 pass fakes opposite and throws a pass or skip pass back to #3 for the shot.

Technique 17 - Pop and Slide

#1 dribbles to the left as #2 pops out to the deep corner. On the pass to #2, #5 slides down to the low block and #4 flashes to the high post.
#2 may have an open shot or look for a pass to
#5 low or #4 high. #1 may also fake the pass to #2 and pass to either #5 or #4.

Technique 18 - Screen and Step Back

#1 has the ball and #4 screens in for #2. #2 pops out to the wing. After screening, #5 steps back hard to the ball. #1 fakes the pass to #2 and passes in to #5 for the shot.
