Individual Defensive Drills - Tag Cutter to Closeout
Individual Defensive Drills

Drill Name: Tag Cutter to Closeout Drill

sketch
1
Purpose: Learn how to get through a screen set by the offensive team.

Player 1 will set a screen on the block. Player 2 will cut to the elbow. Defense 'tags' the cutter, going around the screen. Take the inside route once past the screen to closeout.

Many coaches will teach to go over the screen. By 'tagging' the cutter, or trailing closely behind, and than closing out, I believe you can fight through the downpick more easily. You should note, the defender guarding 1 would step to the high side to eliminate the possibility of a curl cut. This defender would still be in position to defend a pass to the screener, or player 1.
