Offensive Drills

Mikan Series

Purpose: To help the players practice the following skills: right- and left-handed layup, right- and left-handed hook shot, power move, and ball fake to power move.  This is also a great conditioning drill.

Drill Procedure:

Drill #1: Right and Left Hand Layups.
Player stands to the right of the basket, inside the foul lane area at point 'X'.  Drill begins with the player taking a right-handed layup, catching the ball before it hits the floor, and executing a left-handed layup from the left side of the basket at point 'O'.  The goal should be either to make twenty-five baskets in a row without stopping or to do the drill for one minute.

Drill #2: Hook Shot.
Do the same as in Drill #1, only the player uses a right-handed and left-handed hook shot instead of a layup.  The goal is the same as in drill #1 as well.

Drill #3: Power Move.
Player stands to the right of the basket at point 'X' with shoulders and feet parallel to the baseline.  While jumping up to the basket, player must execute a strong power move so that even if closely guarded, the player can get a three-point play.  If he is a right-handed player, the key is to have the left elbow extended to protect the ball.  Player catches the ball before it hits the floor and executes the same power move from the left side of the basket, using the right hand as the shooting hand.  Left-handed shooters should use only the left hand in this drill.  The goal is the same as in #1 and #2.

Drill #4: Head and Ball Fake.
Player follows the same procedure as in #3 but uses a head and ball fake before shooting;  remembering to show the ball during the fake.  In other words, the player brings the ball out of the chest on a 45 degree angle and up to about eye level during the fake.  Then player jumps in toward basket for a three-point play.  The goal should be the same as in the previous drills.

Coaching Points:  The coach must make sure the players use proper form in all drills.  The coach must also encourage players to perform the drills at game speed with maximum effort.
