2 on 2 and 3 on 3 Defensive Drills

Help and Recover from Top Drill

Purpose: To teach the defensive players in the low post area how to help prevent penetration from the top of the key and then be able to recover to their own offensive player, if possible.

Drill: The drill starts with an offensive player at the top and one on the low block, as shown; defensive players match up accordingly.

The defender at the top allows the dribbler to go by and then recovers, with help from his teammate on the low block.  The defensive player at the low block must stop the penetration and even be ready to take the charge.  If X2 does not take a charge (such as O1 stops penetration) he must recover quickly back to the low offensive player.  (Only leave O1, however, if your teammate (X1) has recovered.)

Depending upon your defensive philosophy, you may also want X1 to recover down to the low post and cut off that passing lane.  Ideally, X1 should not be beat to the point that he cannot recover.  If he is, X2 will probably not have the option to recover to his own man; therefore as X1 recovers, he will slide down to the low post to hopefully negate the dump pass.
