Individual Defense Drills

Deny Drill

Purpose: To teach defensive players how to properly deny a pass to the wing in a man-to-man defense.

Drill: The passer (C) starts to one side of the top of the key.  The defensive player (X) tries to deny the pass to the offensive player (O).  The offensive player may only use half the court to try to get open.  The defensive player is on the right side of the court, right hand up in the passing lane and left arm up with the forearm blocking the offensive player and any attempts at a backdoor move.  The defensive player makes the offensive player run into the forearm in order to slow down the backdoor move.  If the offensive player gains possession of the basketball, then the pair plays 1-on-1 on that half of the basketball court.

When the offensive player is on the left side of the court, then the defender should have the left hand in the passing lane and the right forearm up, and so on.

Be sure to do the drill on both sides of the court.  Rotate players through positions, or rotate them in pairs.
