Defending the Screen Drill

Purpose: This drill teaches how to defend against high/low screens in the lane area.  Offensive players learn to set screens and how to properly use the screens.  They will also work on inside moves once they receive a pass.

Drill: The three perimeter players pass the basketball around the perimeter.  The two inside offensive players screen for each other and move; while the two inside defensive players defend against the screens.  The defensive players should use the check and recover technique or the switching technique, whichever the coach prefers.  The defensive players must also talk to one another and work to keep the offensive player from getting the basketball inside.

The check and recover technique involves the defender on the player setting the screen stepping out the 'check' the offensive player to slow him down, allowing the defensive teammate time to fight over the top of the screen.  The defender performing the 'check' must then recover quickly to the person he is guarding.
