4 Low Continuity
| |
The '4 Low Continuity' is called simply that because of the 1-4 low set in which the continuity begins from. The zone offense can be run against either an even- or odd-front zone defense, but will probably work best against an even-front.
To start this zone offense, players O2 through O5 begin by lining up 4 across low. O1 can initiate the offense by dribbling to either side of the court, depending upon which side he wants the potential shot to come from. In this diagram, he begins by dribbling to his left.
O1 dribbles toward the wing as O2 makes a hard cut towards him. O1 passes to O2. O5 flashes high to the elbow. O2 looks to pass to O4 or O5 if open. O2 may also make a skip pass to O3 sliding up on the weakside.
If O2 cannot make a pass to either O4, O5 or O3, the ball is reversed back to O1. This will set up the shot for O2. O1 reverses the ball to the other side on the dribble, pulling the defense over. O3 slides down to the corner.
As O1 dribbles the ball over, O5 steps out high. O1 quickly reverses the ball back to O5. O4 steps in to possibly screen for O2 or to seal off his own defender. O2 slides down behind O4's screen. O5 looks to pass to O2 for the shot or to O4 stepping to the ball after screening and sealing his defender.
If O2 and O4 are defended and not open for the pass, O5 passes to O1 and dives down to the low block. O3 cuts up to the wing and receives the pass from O1.
O3, upon receiving the pass looks to O5 low. O4 flashes high to the elbow and also might be open. O2 slides up on the weakside and may be available for a skip pass as well. If no one is available, the ball will be reversed to O1 to set up the shot for O3.
This sequence is now the same as in diagram 3, except we have now reversed sides of the court. O3 reverses the ball to O1, who dribbles over pulling the defense. O4 steps out high to receive a quick reversal back from O1. O5 screens in.
O3 slides down behind the screen. O4 looks for a pass to O3 in the corner or O5 sealing low.
If no one is open, O4 passes over to O1 and dives down to the low block. We have now reversed the ball from the left side to the right side and are now beginning this continuity all over again.
As you can see, this is a fairly simple continuity offense to utilize against nearly any zone defense. It is structured a certain way, but the players should always feel free to penetrate the zone when available and to make skip passes when available. With good ball skills, this is an offense that can be reversed through several times if needed...such as when you may want to use some clock. It also gives many opportunities for getting the ball inside, as well as setting up 3-point shots.
