2 on 2 and 3 on 3 Defensive Drills
3 on 3 Competitive Defense Drill |
Drill: Divide the team into groups of three. (If needed, you can also go 4 on 4 or 5 on 5). The objective is to play sound defense to prevent the offensive team from scoring. If the defensive team steals the ball, forces a turnover, or gets a rebound, they will stay on defense and a new offensive team will come onto the court. If the offensive team scores, or if a defensive foul is called, the offense will then become the defense and the defensive team will leave the floor. A new offensive team will now come onto the floor. The ball must be checked by the coach after the defense comes up with the basketball and also when the offense scores. Teams not on the court must be ready to enter this drill quickly. Coaching Points: Keep a running score. Award a point to the defensive team for each turnover, rebound, etc. Play to 7-10 points. You may also wish to incorporate consequences for the losing teams or offer them a chance at redemption by shooting free throws. This can be an intensely competitive drill; therefore you may NOT want to keep score the first few times doing it. Also, allow the players to play hard but make sure to keep it under control. |
