Individual Defensive Drills

Drill name: 1 on 1 On-the-Ball Drill

Purpose: The defensive player practices proper on-the-ball defensive techniques while the offensive player works on one-on-one moves.

Drill: Offensively, the players are working on good one-on-one moves (jab step, crossover step, etc). Defensively, the players work on the fundamentals established for playing sound on-ball defense: quick foot movement, staying low in a defensive stance, focusing on the midsection of the offensive player, arm's length distance away, and so on.

The offensive player should be limited to 1, 2, or 3 dribbles so they have to make good moves and not just dribble around. This drill should be done first with hands behind the defender's back. If this is done, then the offensive player can go in only one direction. After a period of time the defender may use hands on defense.
