Purpose: Teach the offensive players to dribble the basketball up court under intense pressure.
Drill: Divide the court into three separate lanes with an offensive player with a basketball and two defensive players in each lane. Players should be matched up according to size and ability -- guards with guards, posts with posts.
The offensive player attempts to dribble the ball the length of the court against the two defenders. The offense must stay in their lane. When the players reach the end of the court they should change roles, offensive player changes to defense and vice versa. The drill should be repeated as many times as desired by the coach, who makes sure each player handles the ball at least once.
Note: As a coach, you may need to begin this drill by making sure the defense does not attempt to steal the ball but simply defends with intensity. After some practice and repetition, the defenders should be allowed to steal or knock the ball away if the dribbler is not protecting it. |
